Carte de visite of Second Lieutenant Hussey, Captain Deane, and First Lieutenant Bradley. Charles S. Hussey, a resident of Tipton, Iowa, enlisted in the U.S. Colored Troops as a Second Lieutenant at age 20 on October 11, 1863. G.A.A. Deane, a resident of Farmington, Iowa, enlisted as a Captain in the U.S. Colored Infantry at age 23 on October 11, 1863. He survived the Civil War. First Lieutenant Moses Leonard Bradley of Company B, of Madison, Wisconsin, was age 20 when he enlisted. Bradley was appointed First Lieutenant on October 11, 1863. The photograph is part of a group of images collected by Colonel John G. Hudson, First Iowa Infantry, African Descent, of federal soldiers and officers stationed at Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas, 1863-1864.

Gardiner Andrus Armstrong Deane was born 23 June 1840 in Norfolk County, Mass. He served in the Civil War, rising to the rank of lieutenant-colonel and inspector-general of the department stationed at Little Rock. At the conclusion of the war, he went into the mercantile business until 1867 when he became chief clerk of the land department of the Union Pacific Railroad (Central Branch).
